What is acupuncture?
Medical Acupuncture which is evidence-based (like all Western medicine) and is only administered to a patient after a complete exam and diagnosis of their underlying condition. Medical Acupuncture acts mainly by stimulating the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.
Acupuncture treatment is generally painless. During acupuncture treatment, the patient may feel a gentle prick (like a mosquito bite) followed by a warmth and heaviness in the muscle that is being treated. This is a result of increased blood flow to that area of the body, bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to aid in healing and repair. But in general acupuncture is comfortable and very relaxing, many patients often fall asleep during treatment.
When performed by a professionally trained and licensed individual acupuncture is both safe and very effective. People may experience mild soreness or fatigue after acupuncture treatment. This is a normal part of the healing process, as the body begins to rebalance and heal.
